Days 166, 167, 168, & 169: Getting Caught Up

Days 166, 167, 168 & 169.

The bad thing about falling behind in my Every Day with Chick-fil-A posts is that I have to really think hard to remember what happened.  The good thing about falling behind is my memory is so poor that I really don’t have much to say about each day, which makes it easier.

So, here goes….

Day 166 was a Chicken Tortilla Soup and a large Coke. I met a friend there so it was one of my few dine-in experiences. I don’t have a single picture proof of this experience, except to say that I didn’t take a picture of my server, Phyllis, because she respectfully declined. Phyllis has always allowed it in the past, but I could tell this was just one of those days, and I was happy to oblige, from this moment on, actually.

Day 167 was an evening CFA run after a meeting at church. Ran into my good friend Steve and his kiddos. I had planned on hitting the drive-thru but I saw them through the window and thought I’d pop in for my Asian Salad and bottled water.

photo 1

Not only was I able to hang with them, but I got an epic pic of the Trinity Chick-fil-A fellas working behind the counter. They were all confused when I was NOT in the drive-thru, understandably so. This is probably my favorite pic of the crew yet:

photo 2

Day 168 was with the fam at the Gulfview Mall. We thought Macy’s or Dillards would have shoe-fitting capacity for Asher. Apparently we forgot where Gulfview Mall is located. Sigh. I don’t say that disparagingly, only as truth that Pasco County doesn’t exactly do the volume that other counties may.

I grabbed a Peppermint Chocolate Chip Shake only as I promised Liza a veggie quiche when we got home (and I delivered, mind you). It was all guys on Day 167, but Day 168 was all ladies:

photo 3

Okay, on to Day 169. This day was all about Asher – me and the boy had some quality time with one another, starting by grabbing a very special custom made gift, courtesy of our friend Kim. I can’t reveal it yet, but it’s fantastic.

Ash and I had breakfast at CFA after meeting Kim; we ordered a #7 and I hooked buddy up with the egg (that I don’t care for). The rest was delicious as always. Asher just couldn’t wait to get his grubby little mouth on this Every Day with Chick-fil-A:

photo 1

Then we had fun in the play area. As always, Asher made it a point to crawl up the slide:

photo 3

Then this evening he was just a troublemaker, but in the best, baby-becoming-toddler sort of way. I suppose you need one of these roll-of-toilet-paper-on-the-floor pictures in every family photo album.

photo 4

So there you have it. Feels good to get caught up as Day 170 looms.

Day 152, Day 153, & Day 154 – Of Spoons & Peppermint Chocolate Chip Milkshakes

Day 152, Day 153, & Day 154.

Another tri-fecta for the peeps. Alas, I do not like smashing three posts into one, but we’re coming up on one month left in my quest to eat Every Day with Chick-fil-A, so a brotha’s gotta do what a brotha’s gotta do! (The last part of that sentence annoyed half of you reading this; heck, it annoyed me too, but it conveys the thought without much thought on my part, and that’s what poor writing is all about.)

It’s a good thing I take pictures so I can remember what happened the past three days (four when you factor Sunday).

Day 152 – Rachael was my server:

photo 1

I grabbed a 6-pk of cookies because I had eaten lasagna that night as part of our compare and contrast box lasagnas post, so I was really in the mood for something sweet.

Day 153 – This was done in the early a.m., making it my second Chick-fil-A trip within a 12-hour span.  I had my 7 a.m. Saturday morning workout with friends (think Crossfit or P90X stuff in modified fashion), and CFA is right on the way home. I popped in and chatted it up with Colby, grabbed my #7 Multi-grain Bagel Sandwich with hash browns and bottled water, and hit the road. The only bummer is I didn’t have my phone because I actually went inside and left it in the car, so I settled for a drive-by on my out:

photo 2

Day 154 – A lot easier to remember today’s trip, as I just got back. It had been a while since I ate, so I splurged in my #5 12-pc Chicken Nuggets meal by going with a limited time Peppermint Chocolate Chip shake, and it was worth every calorie. Don’t worry, I went with a small:

photo 2I asked for the shake to be a little thicker, and words of the Lord proved true again – “Ask and ye shall receive.” This shake was divine. I really savored every minute of it, and used every last bit of self-control I had to save a few slurps for my wife. Thanks to Jessica for the service and Ryan #2 for getting the order spot-on over the intercom:

photo 1

Now I thought I’d give a little Asher montage from this morning’s play session on the lanai.  Please note these pics were taken over a 20 minute span from the same vantage point, but Asher is playing at different spots each time. However, there is another constant in each photo that is noted with the red arrow.  The kid just won’t give up his applesauce spoon. Enjoy.

photo 1

Now don’t let him fool you on this next one. Seems the “Word of the Day” on Sesame Street that we’ve watched and heard like 900 times – “incognito” – has taken root.

20 minutes later, the spoon is still intact. Hey, what can I say? The kid loves spoons.

See you on Day 155 tomorrow!

Day 140 – A Painted Canvas, Good Conversation, & Fearless Son

Day 140.

This was my view this morning when I headed out early to meet a friend for some Chick-fil-A breakfast.  Yes, it’s got that doing-50-sideway-shot-classic-iphone blur going on, but you get the point. It was a beautiful sunrise this morning, the kind of picturesque scene that brings out the existentialist in us all, and for me, had me thanking God for revealing Himself in nature.

No one looks at a painted canvas, however arranged, and thinks a bunch of paint cans got steamrolled by hurricane force wind only to find their contents colorfully and randomly dotting the canvas in eye-catching brilliance, detail, and nuance.  We always assume there was a painter involved. We never think an intelligent agent was absent in the process, despite not seeing any actual painting being done.

So when I see a canvas as breath-taking as the one I saw this morning, well…it inspires my imagination to know who the Painter was.  That, and it gets me stoked for some Chick-fil-A breakfast!

photo 1

Actually, I was already stoked before seeing God’s masterpiece. I was meeting my friend Jim to discuss our 2014 Man Up Missions vision as we plan for our trips to Africa. Jim was an integral part to last year’s trip and I’m hopeful he’ll be with us again in some capacity next summer.

I gave him one of my free meal cards and he enjoyed his first Chick-fil-A breakfast ever, and I enjoyed my (I’ve lost count) #7 Multi-grain Bagel Sandwich meal.   Here’s a shot of Jim and our server Phyllis this morning – I love both these people! We had a great conversation and I’m looking forward already to our next Man Up trip.

photo 2

The rest of my Friday was a typical Friday, but I do have to tell you about one more super cool thing. So I took Asher to the big park in our neighborhood and we practiced walking, swinging, climbing, and most importantly, sliding.  Now I have to tell you, I have nothing to do with his penchant for going head first down slides, but today he went down all three slides at the park on his own, including the big daddy of them all.

As you can see from my below picture, it’s a pretty impressive feat. Obviously this is drawn perfectly to scale (the stick figure is supposed to be Asher, not me).

Liza isn’t crazy about him going down slides, but that’s one reason every son needs a father – we allow for a little risk, and that’s important. You need to see what you can actually do without the restraints of mom sometimes. Sure, he’ll bust his head a few times, but he does that whether I’m hovering over him or not! I just love his fearlessness, and I can’t wait to see what trick he’s got up his sleeve tomorrow.

See you then.

Day 134, Day 135, & Day 136 – All About the Mudder

Day 134, Day 135, & Day 136.

Well, we have another first in the life of my Every Day with Chick-fil-A. Between running a business, parenting this new kiddo, and trying to prep for the ToughMudder, it was a busy weekend, and thus I have gotten a little behind.  Hence, my first 3-day post, combining Friday, Saturday, and Mondays’ Chick-fil-A trips.

Day 134 was hectic and crazy trying to get everything done for the website that I knew I wouldn’t be able to do on Saturday. Thankfully I had some nice time with my son in the morning. I took this picture about a second too late, as Asher had his hand on Louie’s leash with me, both of us walking the dog. Come on, that’s just cute:

everydaywithchickfilaA lot of times I’ll share my fries with Liza, or maybe a couple of nuggets, but I was all about the carbs on my nightly run. I wanted as many calories as possible to be ready for what would ensue the following day. Here are my friends at Chick-fil-A who served me up a #3 Spicy Chicken sandwich with large waffle fries and bottled water:

photo 2Day 135 saw me get up at 4:30 to head out the door at 5:00 and meet up with my fellow Mudders for the Tough Mudder at Westgate River Ranch in the middle of Nowhere, Florida. Any time you’re getting up in the 4’s, you know it’s something crazy.

If you don’t know what the Mudder is, I’m not going to describe it. You just need to check out this clip and you’ll get the point. (Video from last year’s Tampa area mudder, which I also participated in.)

Here we are pre-Mudder:

Yes, war paint is truly necessary.

Especially when you’re my buddy Chris. This is him running to catch the van. We’re not even in the parking lot yet, but he had to take a leak. He ran a loooooong way. War paint helps with that.

photo 1David thought he’d take a picture with a pony before the race. Hey, everyone gets inspired in different ways.

photo 3Here we are before the race:

photo 3Only three of us made it to the finish intact:

photo 4Of course I’m kidding, we all made it, but I don’t have the pic on my phone. It was a great event, tons of fun obstacles, lots of mud, and only minor injuries.

I present to you exhibit A:

photo 5As I mentioned in my Facebook post, it’s tough to be a bald man in a head-full-of-hair world. The obstacle “Anaconda” took a bite out of my skull as a keepsake. Hey, you can’t say I didn’t leave it all out on the field.

Since we were [freaking] starving afterwards, we did hit up a Five Guys on the way home, so by the time I rolled up to Chick-fil-A, it was the perfect time for a calorie-laden, deliciously tasting Cookies & Cream milkshake. And since the iPhone has apparently maxed out its 4 GB or whatever ridiculously small storage space it is, here’s how my pic of Dylan, Chick-fil-A newcomer, turned out:

photo 1Regarding day 136, it was an early morning run to get my favorite Chick-fil-A treat: a #7 Multigrain Bagel Sandwich with the heaven-in-your mouth hash browns. Thanks Donna for the service!

photo 2I would talk more about my Monday but it’s 8:36, and it’s time to Bear Down. If you don’t know what that means, just turn on ESPN at some point tonight and you’ll get the picture.

Day 131 & Day 132 – You, Too, Can Win Chick-fil-A for a Year!

Day 131 & Day 132.

Before I get to the fun time-lapsed pics of Asher enjoying a multi-grain bagel at Chick-fil-A with me on Day 131, let me alert those of you who live in the greater Tampa Bay area (and specifically, West Pasco) to the opportunity of a lifetime – a chance to win your very own Chick-fil-A VIP Black Card!

You heard me right folks. You can join the club.  Well, it may not be exactly like the VIP Black Card, but you will get FREE Chick-fil-A for a year. Here are the details:

everydaywithchickfila3Good luck my friends!

Now, as for Day 131, Asher and I took my brother and his son back to the airport in the morning, and then stopped off for my favorite breakfast menu item – the #7 Multigrain bagel sandwich with provolone cheese (and minus the egg this time). Unfortunately my server didn’t want a pic, so I had to roll with an Asher/Dadda selfie as proof:

everydaywithchickfilaOne of my favorite things to do is listen to this kid eat.  While he’s quieted down for the most part since we first brought him home, he still gets his grunt on for bready foods.  The bagel was a prime target. Let’s watch it frame by fame.

Shot #3 – The Grin of Ecstasy.

photo 4

Love that kid.

As for Day 132, it happened to be at the Gulfview Square Mall, since I had to go out that way to pick up toner at Office Depot anyhow.  I met Kelsey for the first time, and she was impressed (I think???) that this was my 132nd day in a row of eating Chick-fil-A.

photo 1Her question for me? “Do you get sick of it?”  Hmmm…it’s a loaded question. Can you have too much of a good thing? Yes you can. But the Asian Salad I ordered today with extra wontons and almonds is not one of them.

Halloween tomorrow. Don’t forget to dress up for your chance to win FREE Chick-fil-A for a year if you’re in the Pasco County area – good luck my friends!

Day 122 & Day 123 – Training for the Mudder & My Favorite Chick-fil-A Dish

Day 122 & Day 123.

I can’t believe that I actually forgot to do my Every Day with Chick-fil-A blog post from yesterday. I guess because I went so early to get my #7 Chicken, Egg & Cheese Bagel meal and hash browns that I completely forgot at the end of the day to recount my experience!  I actually picked up a little something for Liza too; very strange to actually have to use my own money at Chick-fil-a. 😉

photo 1

There’s not a lot to recount about yesterday. Sorry to disappoint, but it was a typical Friday. I had Asher most of the day, Liza did her Publix run, and we ended the day with a quiet evening at home. Between running the business and taking care of that active boy of ours, we’re both beat. Plus, I’m still trying to train at least a tiny bit for the Tough Mudder I’m doing in two weeks.

Speaking of the Mudder, this was my view this morning on my way to work out with my fellow Mudders:

photo 2While you may be tempted to be impressed that I’m up before the sun even came out to train, don’t be. Really, I haven’t done much. Granted, I did my triathlon a month and a half ago, and I’m always able to go out and run a few miles, but this is 11+ miles and 24 obstacles of absolute fun and craziness, so it’s a whole other ballgame. But, like most things, I know I’ll get through it. Somehow.

One of the nice things about working out early on Saturdays is that I have to drive right by Chick-fil-A on the way home.  Hello Sandy and Colby, and hello to my favorite Chick-fil-A dish – the #7 Chicken, Egg & Cheese Bagel meal and hash browns.

photo 3Today I scrapped the egg for the first time, and substituted some provolone cheese for the American. It’s just so good. Unfortunately I had to warm it up later at home because Asher duties commenced immediately upon returning, but it was still fantastic. Seriously folks, you gotta try this dish.

Well that’s all I got for now. I think we’re running some errands later on, so I will be in my wife’s ear to stop for a 6-pk of Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies. After all, she’s got an [underutilized] VIP Black Card too!

Day 118 – Happy Birthday Grandma T

Day 118

This morning saw the departure of Nana K back to St. Louis. We were able to visit Chick-fil-A twice while she was here, consume lots of cookies, visit the beach, play at the pool, and even enjoy a Welcome to the Family gift – a St. Louis Cardinals jumper and T-shirt.

I can’t tell if Asher likes it or not:
everydaywithchickfila(It should be noted that this gift is a Welcome to the Family gift in the sense that my family has lived in St. Louis since 1994 and have, over time, learned to cheer for the home team. I have no such allegiance for the Cardinals. Mama has had him in a Yankees onesie. But I’m a White Sox fan. So, you can see how confused this poor child will be.)

Asher’s been on Grandma overload, which is, no doubt, a good thing. Both grandmas were able to get together yesterday over chips and salsa, since Chick-fil-A wasn’t open for us:

photo 1After dropping Nana K off at the airport this morning, I thought it’d be a great time to head to Chick-fil-A for some breakfast. With a heavy stomach, I decided to try something I’ve never tried alone before – a Chick-fil-A multigrain bagel. That’s it.  Just a bagel.  And here’s what she looks like:

photo 4

Let me just tell you something – this was spectacular! (Thank you Sesame Street for the word of the day I’ve seen now the last two weeks in a row since you discontinued the Squirmadega episode.)  No cheese cream, no toppings, just a bagel lightly brushed with butter then grilled to perfection. I can’t wait to have my next one!

Thank you to Phyllis, working the drive thru (and my other gal whose name slips me at the moment – I am so sorry!, as well as one of the morning managers who I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet):

photo 3The rest of the ride we practiced wearing our sunglasses, the Babiators.  And by we, I mean this guy:

photo 2After some playing, lunch, and a nap, it was basically time for another celebration – Grandma T’s birthday!  Out goes one grandma (Nana K), and in comes another (Grandma T).  And what better place (other than Chick-fil-A, of course), to enjoy a birthday celebration than at Bonefish! So we headed out there this evening, and Asher had a great time with Grandma. He behaved excellently. (Nevermind this incriminating photo of him with his rear on the table):

photo 5

All in all, it was a great day, and I’m already thinking about my Chick-fil-A bagel again tomorrow. 🙂

Day 107 – The Chick-fil-A Shutdown

Day 107.

I have sad news to report.  With the implementation of Obamacare, my local Chick-fil-A was forced to reduce staff and cut its operating hours due to exorbitant fees for being out of compliance as a result of the Affordable Care Act. With the partial shutdown of our government today, even if Chick-fil-a was open when I attempted to go, I wouldn’t have been able to get there as all roadwork ceased on Starkey road, creating a backup of biblical proportions.

Alas, I blame President Obama for my lack of free Chick-fil-A today.

Of course this isn’t true, but it’s not such a big stretch, is it?  Okay, maybe my free Chick-fil-A and a trillion dollar spending spree by the government aren’t exactly the same. However, VISA’s and Passports were halted as of this morning, which makes me grateful that Asher is home, safe and sound. Not sure if it would’ve affected him anyhow, but I’m thankful nonetheless.

But seriously though, today was a busy day that allowed me to get Chick-fil-A in the morning! Yes!  Love me some Chick-fil-A breakfast. I was up early to take my sister and her boy to the airport, and she introduced me to the app, WAYZ. (I think I spelled that correctly.)  It’s a GPS that gives you real-time estimated arrival time, factoring in construction, accidents, normal heavy traffic, etc. I didn’t believe her at first, but sure enough, we arrived within one minute of the ETA. Pretty sweet. And while I’d like to make fun of my brother-in-law for putting it on as they head to Sunday services each week (with no traffic to speak of) just so he can accumulate WAYZ points (or whatever they’re called), I guess I’ll let him off the hook. (Geek!)

After I dropped Kelly and Reid off, I went home to pick up Mr. Asher and we hit the road again. First stop?  Target. Had to get a new router because I about lost my Christianity last night with my computer and connectivity problems. (Side note – it’s theologically impossible to lose your salvation, for the record……just an expression folks.)

We checked out and I noticed to Ethiopian coffee display at the Starbucks inside, so I snapped a half-selfie with Ash-baby. Not the greatest pic in the world, but you get the point. everydaywithchickfila

Then we headed about two minutes away to the Trinity Chick-fil-A and I grabbed a Chicken Mini’s breakfast meal (4 ct) with a bottled water. I quickly the devoured the hash browns but took my time on those succulent mini’s, provided by Ashley and the gang at C-fil-A.

photo 2

Then it was off to Grandma’s house to pick up our “wusha” (Amharic for dog), Louie. Louie got a special treat by staying at Grandma’s for the weekend while my sister was here. Here he is in his crate in the back of the Kia Sorento we’ve been test-driving:

photo 3

The rest of the day was kind of a blur. I got the router set up after three calls and a couple of hours with Brighthouse. I fixed my laptop connectivity settings and everything seems to be running like a charm. When you’re a part of a blogging empire like we have in our house, fast and reliable Internet service is a must.

Hilarious. Just as I was typing that I saw the pop-up on my laptop – “Computer scan to printer has been lost.”

Hashtag yougottabekiddingme.

Day 92 – An Epiphany

Day 92.

I had an epiphany this morning about my Chick-fil-A runs.   Liza and I switch off in terms of who’s running Addicted to Saving in the morning. Sometimes she’s posting and I take the boy, and sometimes it’s the other way around.

Until today, in the morning, I will feed Asher, play on the floor, go for a walk, or just take him around and watch him explore the house. It dawned on me – why on earth am I not taking the boy to Chick-fil-A for BREAKFAST?

Hello Breakfast Bagel, the best thing on the menu:

everydaywithchickfila5Now, I got mine with provolone cheese, but this was far too exciting (and delicious) of a revelation.

Asher. Me. Chick-fil-A. Morning. Breakfast bagel. Hash browns. Best ever.

And…..Asher’s best shirt ever. My son sure does tell it like it is:

Thanks to this gentleman who kindly served me and to whom I apologize for not remembering his name (that was over 12 hours ago in my defense).

The ride home we listened to Moody Radio, and while I was stimulated, it put little boo to sleep:

As I write this post, he’s asleep again, and I will be soon.

P.S. If I seem distracted, it’s because I’m getting caught up on all our DVR’s of Big Brother and I’m watching Amanda completely self-destruct.

P.P.S. If you’re judging me for watching Big Brother, I don’t blame you. I cannot, to this day, tell you why I enjoy this social experiment, but I’m fascinated by it. I tell Liza at least once every episode that she could win the money.  Her personality is tailor-made for it.

P.P.P.S. I’m only caught up through the 8/7 episode so if you spill the beans I will Fed Ex one of Asher’s dirty diapers to your home and place of business.

Day 70 – Can’t Take Him Back Fatherhood

Day 70.

everydaywithchickfila1Day 70 is always going to be a near and dear one to my heart for the following reason: today I get to be a dad to this little man above being held by his mama. For real. Not just tell people about it, not just visit my son for a couple of hours a day, but we’re talking full time, all out, can’t-take-him-back fatherhood.

As I type this blog entry, I am sitting in the Washington Dulles International Airport, where I’ve been since I flew in this morning. I’ve been very hard at work: everydaywithchickfila

It’s just before 2:00 pm in the afternoon, which means I have about another two hours before Liza and Asher’s flight gets in from Frankfurt. Since I woke up this morning (about 5 a.m. as I lay in bed with giddy anticipation), I’ve had a grin on my face from ear to ear. Today is finally the day.

Don’t get me wrong, I know it’s not going to be easy. In fact, I know I’m in for the battle of my life. To raise this young man in a culture that is distinctly different from the man I know God wants him to be…..well, that’s going to be a challenge. And ultimately, he’s his own person. Even at 10 months old, I know that he is his own person. I cannot control him, manipulate him, or trick him into anything. I mean, I could, but that is not my desire. My desire is to simply point him to Jesus, and should Jesus call Asher to Himself, then I have done my job. But even if He doesn’t, I want to still be able to say I’ve done my job, and that’s to live out each day as an example of Christ’s love, to make Him attractive to Asher, so that Asher would not want anything this world has to offer with its fleeting and passing pleasures, but would want Christ Himself.

And Chick-fil-A.  Yes, I want him to love Chick-fil-A.

I left the house about 6:15 this morning headed for the airport and was hoping to grab some cookies to bring to Liza as she got off the plane.  Alas, when Paul took my order, he informed me that there were no cookies baked at the moment.  Darnit!

everydaywithchickfila3I opted instead for the #8 Oatmeal & Fruit Combo, which is not something I thought I would ever do willingly again, apart from my menu review. But it sounded good this morning primarily because I don’t do breakfast usually. Don’t get me wrong – I love breakfast food, probably more than any other.  Just not at 6:40 in the morning.  I’m a coffee only kind of guy typically before 9:30/10:00 a.m. But so as to not waste the trip, Oatmeal and Fruit it was!

everydaywithchickfila2So now I wait. The next two hours are probably going to drag by as slowly as possible, so hopefully there are no delays in the air. There’s a good chance my face is permanently imprinted with the smile and pride of a brand new daddy.

The question is, will mama let Asher come to Chick-fil-A with me tomorrow?  I have a feeling she might want some alone time. 😉
